Located in downtown Fremont’s Central Park, Lake Elizabeth’s 2-mile loop is more of a walk than a hike. It ain’t wilderness. However, it’s still a nice place to picnic and people-watch if you don’t have the time or inclination for something more outdoorsy. You’ll occasionally see some wetland birds on a stopover, and the small island near the southern corner is often crowded with egrets and herons but more typically the wildlife doesn’t get more wild than an off-leash dog. Along the back side of the lake, there’s a small creek along the opposite side of the path where you can spot turtles sunning themselves along the banks or on downed branches.
